What does "Spirituality in the Workplace" mean?
Spirituality in the workplace means going beyond just "doing unto others as you would have them do unto you." It's about focusing on the quality of our lives and realizing that we're all interconnected. It's about recognizing that you can reach your goals more easily by serving others as best as you can, and by helping others achieve their goals. Successful businesses and successful relationships in general, are built upon service to others.
For me spirituality in the workplace means many things, including:
· viewing what I do at work as part of my life's purpose and not as something separate from my principles and values;
· understanding that what I do impacts not only me, but my colleagues, my customers, my company, my industry, my community and my environment;
· being proactive to make my company a better place for the current and future employees as well as customers and vendors;
· taking full responsibility for my actions and my "in-actions" – no excuses, no finger pointing;
· telling the truth, having integrity and being authentic;
· continuous, life-long learning – whether it's acquiring new skills, increasing self-knowledge or exploring new ideas;
· communicating from my heart rather than my ego and encouraging others do the same;
· expressing gratitude and appreciation openly and often;
· making conscious choices to do what's morally and ethically right every moment of every day;
· giving honest feedback in such a way as to maintain my own and the other person's self-esteem;
· being open-minded as well as non-judgmental and treating everyone with respect no matter what their job title, their race, their religion, their gender or their income bracket, et cetera;
· encouraging everyone to creatively solve their problems, and then unleashing their creativity to other arenas of the business and the community;
· and realizing that change is the only constant in life other than death and taxes.
Spirituality in the workplace involves doing more than just showing up on time for work and doing the minimum that's expected. It involves realizing that you're working at a job that you chose for whatever reasons and knowing that you have the power to "choose again" if you are unhappy in your current situation. You can either change jobs or change your attitude. In either case, it's important to bring your mind and spirit to work as well as your body so that it'll be a satisfying experience for you and all who come into contact with you. If that's not possible in your current environment, then either find ways to improve the situation or find another job at company whose culture is more in harmony with your behavior and values.
Whether you change jobs or stay right where you are, the most important words to remember and to practice are love, compassion, tolerance, and generosity – for yourself and for others. They form the essence of what spirituality at work is all about and they create an environment where miracles can happen.
